How to make a Picture Cake just like the Bakeries

1. Start by having a level, clean (crumb free), room temperature cake. If your cake has a “hump” in the middle gently cut the top level using a serrated knife. Helpful hint: put your cake in the freezer for a few minutes as this will make it easier to cut and you won’t get as many crumbs.

2. Ice your cake as you would any other cake.Various frosting can be used such as butter cream (produces the best results), whipped cream or non-dairy topping and even frozen ice cream cakes. Whipped cream or non-dairy topping can cause image to fade if left in the refrigerator overnight. For the best results apply the edible image immediately after frosting your cake. Your frosting or icing should not be dry or have a skin prior to placing the edible image.

3. Remove the edible image from the plastic backing sheet. The edible image should peel away easily from the plastic backing sheet. If any difficulty: pull backing sheet over the sharp edge of a table - imaged side up. If the imaged sheet feels moist and does not release from backing sheet with ease; let the sheet air dry for about 20 minutes. They are made of actual frosting so humidity affects the sheets; when it’s hot the sheets can be too dry and when there is moisture in the air the sheet can become too moist. Gently remove the edible image beginning with a corner - do not pull hard on the sheet as they are a bit delicate and could rip.

Lay the edible image sheet on top of your cake by holding ends and gently applying from the middle first, to the ends. Gently smooth out the edible image making sure the edges are touching frosting. You have about 5 minutes and the imaged sheet will merge with the frosting. Do not touch it at this point; it will leave a finger print just like the frosting does when touched.

4. Create some piped borders around the edible image or apply festive sprinkles for an added touch.

Helpful Hints

1. Keep your edible image in the air tight bag until ready to use. Store at room temperature. DO NOT LET WATER COME IN CONTACT WITH THE EDIBLE IMAGE BEFORE OR AFTER ON CAKE. The sheet will melt and ruin the print.

2. We suggest using white frosting so your image will stand out better. Using chocolate can darken some images especially in the white color areas.

3. If your frosting has become dry, spray a fine mist of water on your frosting before applying the edible image as the image will not merge with your cakes frosting if it has a “skin” on it. Spray a FINE mist, do not wet the cake.

4. Weather conditions can affect the imaged sheets:
DRY & BRITTLE: If the edible image has become dry and brittle, place a damp (not dripping) paper towel in the bag (against back side of sheet - not on imaged side) and let it sit for an hour. This will make the sheet moist. Before placing on cake allow sheet to dry for about 20 minutes.

MOIST: In humid weather or for faster drying time you can dry the image with a blow dryer; keep at least 12 inches away and dry on low for just a few minutes. Keep moving the dryer around the image, do not keep the dryer in one place for more than 5 seconds, you don’t want to burn or melt the frosting image.

5. If the imaged sheet creases or rips while placing: don’t panic, gently rub the area back together and it hardly shows.
